District 13 · Singapore
Under-the-radar, improving, value play
D13 has always been considered a workers' neighbourhood. Macpherson was named after Lieutenant Colonel Ronald Macpherson, and the area grew up around light industrial activity — printing presses, small factories, and workshop spaces along Aljunied Road. Potong Pasir — literally 'cut sand' in Malay — was famous in politics as the last opposition-held constituency for decades. Today, both areas have benefited from MRT connectivity (the Circle Line runs through Macpherson, and Potong Pasir has its own NEL station). There's been a quiet gentrification happening — older walk-ups are giving way to newer condos, and the food scene along Upper Serangoon Road is genuinely excellent. It's one of those districts where you can still find value if you know where to look.
