District 19 · Singapore
Young families, new-town energy, up-and-coming
D19 is young Singapore. Punggol and Sengkang are the newest towns on the island, built from scratch starting in the late 1990s. Punggol Waterway Town, with its artificial waterway and parks, was designed as the 'Waterfront Town of the 21st Century.' The demographic here skews young — lots of young couples and growing families attracted by the relatively affordable BTO flats and the promise of new amenities. Hougang, by contrast, is one of the older heartland towns, known for its strong community identity and fiercely loyal hawker centre regulars. Hougang Mall and Kovan are the main hangout spots. The Northeast Line serves the entire district well, and the upcoming Cross Island Line will add even more connectivity. This is where Singapore's next generation is putting down roots.
