Queenstown was Singapore's first satellite town, built in the 1950s when the country was still under British rule. It was named after Queen Elizabeth II to mark her coronation. Alexandra used to be known for its military barracks and hospital; the old Alexandra Hospital still stands as a reminder of the Japanese Occupation. Commonwealth is popular with young families who want to stay relatively central without paying Orchard Road prices. IKEA Alexandra is practically a weekend institution here.
