Queenstown was Singapore's first satellite town, built in the 1950s when the country was still under British rule. It was named after Queen Elizabeth II to mark her coronation. The older HDB blocks here are some of the most storied in Singapore — this is where public housing began. Alexandra used to be known for its military barracks and hospital; the old Alexandra Hospital still stands as a reminder of the Japanese Occupation. Over the years, the area has matured into a very liveable heartland neighbourhood with great schools, parks, and direct MRT access. Commonwealth is popular with young families who want to stay relatively central without paying Orchard Road prices. IKEA Alexandra is practically a weekend institution here.
