The government cleaned it up in the 1980s, and today it's a major shopping and commercial hub — Bugis Junction, Bugis+, and the old Haji Lane area all draw massive crowds. Beach Road is home to the legendary Raffles Hotel, which has hosted everyone from Somerset Maugham to Elizabeth Taylor. The Kampong Glam area, with the Sultan Mosque and Arab Street, gives this district a genuinely multicultural feel that you won't find anywhere else on the island.
